Insanity is Doing the Same Thing Twice

Insanity is doing the same thing twice,

But I did it three times.

Exposed four words to you,

Receiving not one in return.

Spent five years hoping,

The sixth my funeral;

Not even seven guests.

Eight times I'd begged for you back

For you to say no nine times.

I used to be your perfect ten,

Sometimes an eleven, your heaven on earth.

Twelve steps to recovering,

But the thirteenth is falling in love again.

  1. I really love this step poem. It's a romantic tragedy that is gracefully written. That being said, the only tweak I would make would be instead of fooling me once was your fault rewrite as: fool me once, you're to blame/ fool me twice my insanity has put me to shame or something along those lines to make it less choppy. Overall, beautiful poem and my favorite stanza was stanza 2.

  2. This poem gets off to a fabulous start, but I feel like it ends too quickly! I want more numbers. I love the wit here, especially in lines like "Twelve steps to recovering, / But the thirteenth is falling in love again."

So my suggestion is to cut the last line and draw it out more. The short lines are working nicely for you. This just needs development.

  3. I really liked this poem. It's so tragically beautiful and written so well. Stanza 4 is my favorite. It really resonate with me. Specifically I love the last two lines in the stanza. I think it depicts heartbreak and what comes after, with the final step being in love again, in this same beautifully tragic way. Love it!!

  4. WOW!!! this one is amazing! i love how ironic this line is: Twelve steps to recovering/

But the thirteenth is falling in love again.
this is the deepest and most torturous kind of love, and i love how the entire poem follows a kind of recovery process. i am so blown away by this poem. amazing job, enya!!!!!
